Meet The Herd

Elephants & Orphans

The Jabulani elephant herd are a unique and close-knit family that started with Jabulani, an orphaned elephant who was rescued in 1997, and a herd of elephants that were rescued from Zimbabwe in 2002 – whose fates crossed to form the Jabulani Herd as we know it today.

a day in the life of a herd elephant

05:45

Morning Wake-Up | The herd stirs as the sun rises. Some elephants are still resting on sand mounds while others begin feeding on the previous night's leftovers. Carers check each elephant for injuries or treatments.

Joining Up | The orphans from the nursery join the main herd, and together they begin their day in the reserve, led by their carers.

07:00

Foraging & Social Time | The elephants spread out to forage. The youngsters learn from the adults by copying their actions and spending time together.

13:00

Swim & Shift Change | The herd visits the waterhole to drink, bathe or swim. The carer teams rotate at this time.

14:00

Exploring & Milk Time | The herd continues roaming and resting in the bush. Orphans still on milk receive bottle feeds out in the bush.

17:00

Heading Home | As the sun lowers, the herd returns to the homestead. Carers clean the space, restock fresh food, and prepare sand mounds for sleeping.

18:00

Nightfall & Rest | The elephants settle in for the night. Carers stay nearby, listening for any threats like predators or wild elephants, ensuring the herd rests safely.
